In the beginning was utopia. "We are creating a world in which everyone is equal", once wrote a certain John Perry Barlow, internet mastermind and long-time member of the psych-rock band The Grateful Dead.

How much jazz fits into a week, one might ask in times of all-encompassing quantification tendencies. October proved it: More than one might usually think. This year's Leipzig Jazz Days had 34 program items to offer. And anyone who, like me, used to believe that one concert a week was enough for people over 30 was proven wrong for the first time.

Over the past few months, we have repeatedly spilled the beans here with little tidbits of information - but now it's time to get down to business. Or to put it another way: after long days, weeks and months of patient waiting, a bubbling rumor mill, small water level reports and highlights, we can now announce: The 49th Leipzig Jazz Days are just around the corner.

Music is movement - through time and space, through bodies and cultures. And it is boundless. It is not for nothing that the English word "soundscapes" is commonly used. And as with all other diverse landscapes, this also applies here: Their continued existence is symbolized in the blossom. If this basic insight is resisted, if it is sealed off from its environment and acoustic walls and barbed wire are erected, it withers away.

The Germans have become lazy. At least that's what you might think if you've been following the media discourse in recent times. The once much-vaunted "work-life balance" is increasingly falling into disrepute. And some of the statements made by political leaders make you want to defiantly respond with Pipi Longstocking, who sang cheerfully and carefree almost 60 years ago: "Being lazy is wonderful."

From Ellington's "Take The 'A' Train" to Jimmy Forrest's "On The Road", from Nat King Cole's "Route 66" to Wes Montgomery's "Road Song": traveling as a motif has always been a central theme of jazz. No wonder, since the history of the genre itself is one of constant travel - from the southern states to the industrial north, and from there to other parts of the world.

What do bands as different as The Firm, The Law, SuperHeavy and Audioslave have in common?
Apart from their tasteless band names, not too much, you might think. But one
one thing stands out: they are all listed in music history as so-called supergroups.

Today's Jazzkalender is extremely casual and stylish. Elegantly wrapped in petrol, it is not afraid to show a wild animal on the cover. But don't worry, the content is tried and tested: Jazz, jazz, jazz and whatever else "goes" in February, as they say.
