Jazzkalender #328

LET'S TALK ABOUT JAZZ ... AND THE FUTURE.

The British cultural theorist Mark Fisher once dismissed the music of the future: According to him, the sounds of the present were no longer forward-looking but backward-looking - a retromanic conglomeration of set pieces from the past. But many have since contradicted him.

The Leipzig festival FUTURUM does this not verbally, but in a very practical way. For over 30 years now, it has been inviting young artists to redefine, question or break down the boundaries of jazz year after year. This year's line-up includes such promising acts as the jazz-punk formation Städtische Manieren and the Kurkapelle Sonnendeck, which combines technoid sounds with jazz set pieces.

Berlin musician Barbara Morgenstern also conveys a vague idea of the future with her music: "Everything will be the same as always/ Except the old world", she sings in the title track of her new album "In anderem Licht". She once again puts herself "between the stools", as another of the many great tracks on it is called. On April 17, the trained jazz musician will be a guest at the UT Connewitz, where she and her virtuoso formation will present her chamber-musical, highly poetic songs.

However, if you want to use the approaching spring for your first short trip of the year, we recommend a visit to the Westphalian cities of Hamm or Gronau, for example: Both have jazz festivals in April, some with top-class line-ups. If, on the other hand, you prefer something a little more Hanseatic, you can also book a ticket to Bremen, where the internationally renowned jazzahead! will be taking place again this year.

Greetings from the future,

Luca
