Let's talk about jazz, Johann Sebastian
Some people think of June as a summer month when you can slow down a bit. But not with Jazzclub Leipzig, people! June 2017 will be Jazzclub Leipzig's most packed jazz month ever! Jazz days, so to speak. Six concerts over seven days, MusikZeit festival, Jewish Week, two big bands and, for the first time, the Jazz Days as a guest at the Bach Festival. Makes you wish you had a monthly ticket.
But first things first. At the beginning of the month, we're taking it a little easier, although "easier" isn't quite right, as Drastischer Frühling, i.e. Anton, Sasch, Gaga and Werner, will be playing on June 6. After that it gets even more drastic: on June 8 and 9 there will be four exquisite solo concerts at MUSIKZEIT with Ralph Towner (!), Maike Lindemann (!), Robert Lucaciu (!) and Volker Hemken (!). On June 12 and 28, we'll hop into the time machine, first with Antonia Hausmann and Johannes Lauer to the trombone luminaries J. J. Johnson and Kai Winding, then with Pepe Berns and HMT students to the Canadian trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler.
On 17.6. we will then present a concert at the Bachfest for the first time: none other than Richie Beirach himself will combine Bach and contemporary improvisation at the UT Connewitz. (Incidentally, a certain Joshua Redman and his trio, the duo Iiro Rantala & Ulf Wakenius and organist Cameron Carpenter will also be playing at the Bachfest if it doesn't rain.) The Bachfest will be directly followed by the Jewish Week, the opening concert of which will be given by the boundary-breaking Israeli singer Efrat Alony at the Telegraph on June 18. And because that's not enough, we have two more little things in the program: two big bands on 23 and 30 June, the Subway Jazz Orchestra from Cologne and the HMT Big Band.
