These are four young people from Cologne who bring a refreshing mix of jazz, hip-hop and electronic music to the stage and close the 43rd Leipzig Jazz Days for the time being!
The special concert of the 43rd Leipziger Jazztage is the logical end point of a festival opening up to visions. Following in the footsteps of John Mc Laughlin, Herbie Hancock is another hero of music history who has shown how jazz can be innovatively continued as an unconstrained contemporary art of the unpredictable.
A direct meeting of the two occurred during their joint work together with Dexter Gordon for the 1986 premiere of Bernard Tavernier's film "Round Midnight" about the life of Bud Powell, for which Hancock had written the Oscar and Grammy award-winning music. Successful film scores - think of Antonioni's "Blow Up" or "Death Wish," "Colors," "Harlem Nights,"... - are just one of Hancock's fields of activity. He composed hits like "Watermelon Man" (1960), "Cantaloup Island" (1963) and "Rock It" (1983) and released hit albums like "Maiden Voyage" (1965), "Crossings" (1972), "Sextant" (1973) and the million-selling "Headhunters" (1973).
His duo concerts at the pianos with Chick Corea in America and Europe (1978/79) are legendary. As a pianist and keyboardist with phenomenal playing technique, the restless tastemaker was involved in recordings of the greats: Wes Montgomery, Milt Jackson, Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Wynton Marsalis. Remarkably involved was his collaboration with Joni Mitchell. He won two Grammys in 2008 for his tribute "The Joni Letters."
Coming from cool jazz, Hancock did not take the step to totally unbound improvisation. Rather, transcending purist stylistic boundaries and also commercially oriented, he has always significantly influenced developments in popular music such as electric jazz, jazz rock, fusion, funk, techno, hip hop and jazz rap, without denying that his artistic sovereignty is grounded in black tradition with a deeply rooted blues and gospel feeling. His fellow musicians from Leipzig are sought-after soloists of extraordinary standing: Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals, James Genus on bass and drummer Justin Tyson. A star from the eternal jazz sky ennobles the Leipziger Jazztage at the main venue of its birth decade as a festival of lively music with format and trend-setting perspectives. What a post-finale for the Forty-Third!
