Niels Klein "Tubes and Wires
The quartet of the Cologne saxophonist combines science fiction and jazz to warm sound collages with bass clarinet and analog synthesizers. The result is a futuristic soundscape with organic sounds.
"A sound like riding bumper cars in the jungle at night." With a twinkle in his eye, saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Niels Klein has named his band, as well as the new album, Tubes & Wires: "Tubes" are the various clarinets that Klein blows, "Wires" the many electronic, analog and digital aids that he has connected to each other with cables and controls with his "effect clarinets." Exciting are not only the analog synthesizers that are used, but also a rare and little known Ondes Martenot. This is a monophonic electronic musical instrument invented in 1928.
The music of Tubes & Wires is reminiscent of Joe Zawinul's Weather Report from the 1970s, but transposed into the now of young improvisers from Europe. Tubes & Wires plays a cross-border improvisational music that unfolds a collage-like, shimmering conundrum of jazz and rock, pop, funk and club culture from sound and groove particles.
