The voice, the instrument: For the 25th anniversary of our small festival MusikZeit, we show what colors and special forms of expression are possible through the voice in contemporary jazz.

In a variation of a famous classical sentence, the human voice could say of itself: I am the instrument - no instrument is foreign to me. For what other voice could claim to contain so many instrumental potentials and timbres? What other voice can claim to be not only an instrument, but even an organ? None is as close to us as it is: an instrument within the instrumentalist. None is learned earlier: everyone starts singing - while praying, while playing, in the tub, on the chamber pot... It is the most intimate: there can be no more direct mouthpiece of one's own feelings. A mouthpiece in the double sense, as a medium of logos and melos. It is universal: the infinite scale of the violin, the sonority of the saxophone, the percussiveness of a drum kit, not to mention the infinite realm of imitation - all these are at its disposal. Thus the voice is the instrument of instruments. It was also the prelude to the history of jazz - the organ of freedom of a subjugated existence. But then it is usually only one instrument among many. Until it is rediscovered...
