Ensemble Ambidexter & Philipp Rumsch Ensemble

UT Connewitz

Philipp Rumsch is no stranger to the local jazz scene. The pianist studied at the HMT with Michael Wollny and Richie Beirach and received the Leipzig Jazz Newcomer Award in 2018.

Since the release of his debut album "Reflections" in 2018, he and his twelve-piece ensemble have been exploring the intersections between jazz and avant-garde pop, combining both electronic and acoustic sound elements. With his music-historically trained eye, he picks up on various reference points from the past and incorporates them into his musical construct, which circumvents musical stereotypes on a large scale and instead always implies unexpected and exciting twists and turns. Following their second album "µ: of anxiety x discernment", which was highly praised by the BBC, NDR and others, the ensemble is now presenting new and previously unreleased material for the first time.

This evening, the formation will share the stage with the Ambidexter ensemble, also based in Leipzig, led by Dutch violinist Floortje Beljon. With her seven fellow musicians, she combines jazz and chamber music in a way in which the individual elements are not placed rigidly and separately next to each other, but rather enter into a never-ending dialog with each other through the creative exchange between the musicians.
