"Berlin's birthplace is unknown" - what at first sounds like a bad joke is actually the opening of an encyclopedia article about Israel Isidore Beilin, called Irving Berlin. The composer, who was born in 1888 in the Russian Empire and grew up in the USA, wrote jazz standards such as "Cheek to Cheek", "Puttin on the Ritz" and "How deep is the ocean". He became popular especially with "White Christmas" from the Bing Crosby film "Holiday Inn" and "God Bless America," which became the unofficial anthem of the USA during World War II. Leipzig pianist Jonas Timm, together with Matze Eichhorn on bass and drummer Heinrich Köbberling, will play some of Berlin's lesser-known pieces in the original and rework the better-known ones.
