Music history and the present: the return of the "Gentleman of Jazz"!

Introducing Dave Holland to the jazz audience is a bit like explaining to the classical music world who Johann Sebastian Bach was. Ever since the double bassist recorded the legendary album "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock at the end of the 1960s, he has been one of the greats of the genre.

Since then, the native Brit has lived in the USA, currently in New York. And just like the US metropolis, Holland's sound is a melting pot of the most diverse, sometimes contradictory influences. The sounds of his trio combine elements of hard bop, free jazz, European and transcultural music traditions, funk and ballads. Together with his two fellow musicians - drummer Nasheet Waits and saxophonist Jaleel Shaw - Holland builds all this into a genuinely new body of sound.

The interaction between Waits, Shaw and Holland resembles a musical dialog of unimaginable quality. Watching the three of them on stage, one sometimes wonders whether they even need to talk to each other. Because anyone who is able to play like this, it seems, has long since got rid of the need to speak.

The list of albums Holland was involved in over the course of his life would go beyond any scope. His last album as a trio was "Without Deception", released in 2020, which won the German Record Critics' Award and was highly praised in newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune, Jazztimes and the Guardian.
