If you talk about Volker Heuken and his sextet, you can't help but mention their debut album "Portugal". If this happens, it is not far away to think of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, who once wrote "To read is to dream through someone else's hand". Transferred to the Heukens music this means logically: A dream, free from the fear of any alp. In his compositions, the vibraphonist knows how to give the musicians room for their individual desire to play and at the same time to develop a self-evident collective sound from the respective potential, which seems to be permeated by luminous moments. Volker Heuken is now playing his HMT master's degree concert with this very sextet and has the ensemble's second album up his sleeve. "Siblings" is the name of the new program, which will be released on CD in the fall. Once again, Heuken takes up multi-layered, lyrically interwoven themes in his compositions. The emotional dynamics of the musical siblings, for which the English term "siblings" stands, range from filigree floating to improvisational outbursts.
