Indeterminate in time, sometime between light and dark: gray. Far away wanders that gaze, which is directed at the Point Of Departure record cover - flies far out into the shadows that have remained from the tides. For the recordings of that album, the Berlin saxophonist locked himself up for a week with his band in a studio in the middle of the rough nature of Ireland. The result is a rhythmically filigree weave. Weniger's compositions trace inner narratives, the strands of which branch together in the bold improvisations. "We found we could all play together with our eyes closed...except for those hilarious moments when we'd break up and look..." said Don Grusin about the recording process, the end result of which is music whose references to the fusion jazz of the '70s are clearly felt, and which has also forged its own contemporary path. At the end of the evening we will perhaps have understood what it means to arrive at the departure.
