Jazzclub Live: Flashback #23 Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond
TIP
Both were born in the 20s, one in New York, the other in San Francisco. One was first a midwife in the "Birth of the Cool" before he founded a legendary quartet with Chet Baker, because it had no harmony instruments. With his light, clarinet-like playing, he helped the baritone saxophone gain solo recognition in modern jazz. The other also always captivated with light, flowing sound, especially during his 16 years in the Dave Brubeck Quartet, whose biggest hit he wrote ("Take Five"). He also bequeathed his entire legacy and the royalties for "Take Five" to the Red Cross.
We won't tell you what their names are. But we give a hint: Johannes Moritz (baritonsax), Matti Oehl (altsax), Carl Wittig (bass) and Tom Friedrich (drums) play the music of the two exactly 60 years after the release of the album "Gerry Mulligan Paul Desmond Quartet".
