Born in 1930, Wheeler was once part of Tony Oxley's sextet and played regularly in Alexander von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra. His "Song for Someone" was Melody Maker's Album of the Year. He recorded the album "Gnu High" with Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette before forming the trio Azimuth with John Taylor and Norma Winstone and playing in the Dave Holland Quintet in the 80s.
