SOUTHERN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WITH JOHANNA SUMMER
The leap from Johannes to Johanna is not just a small one in a semiotic sense—as the Spielvereinigung Süd points out. Following their successful collaboration with saxophonist Johannes Enders in March, they are now embarking on a musical partnership with Johanna Summer.
The Leipzig-based pianist represents a new generation of musicians who blend jazz tradition with an unwavering sense of contemporary trends. This musical independence can be attributed in no small part to her formative encounter with free-jazz legend Günther “Baby” Sommer, with whom she once studied in Dresden.
The musical foundation of the collaboration with Spielvereinigung Süd consists of four compositions that Summer arranged for the WDR Big Band some time ago. These are complemented by additional pieces that she has reworked with members of the ensemble. Together with the Johanna Summer Trio’sJazzclub concert on June 26 at naTo, the evening offers an opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the diverse work of one of the most promising jazz musicians of our time.
