TIP
The Spielvereinigung presents one of the most important contemporary composers and arrangers of American big band jazz. Michael Abene played in the 60s in the big bands of Don Ellis and Maynard Ferguson, later arranged for David Taylor, Liza Minnelli, B.B. King, Gary Burton and for Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra, among others. He played with Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich and Dizzy Gillespie, among others, and received a Grammy for his tribute to Duke Ellington ("Digital Duke") in 1988. He worked as a music educator at the Manhattan School of Music and was principal conductor of the WDR Big Band in Cologne from 2004 to 2014, with whom he won two more Grammys.
