HMT Jazzfest mini
TIP
"Sophisticated Lady (Ella & Ellington)."
With Ella Fitzgerald, one of the "nightingales of America" looks down on Leipzig from offstage as her 100th birthday is celebrated in the center of young jazz. Inimitably, she has set standards for jazz singing. Her enormous spectrum ranges from the expressive ballad to bebop improvised as if instrumental. Intoning over three octaves as a matter of course and phrasing effortlessly, impressive with scat choruses and skillfully dirty glissandi. Spectacular her recording of "The Duke Ellington Songbook" exactly 60 years ago as well as her concerts with Ellington. About her, he said, "As far as her musicality is concerned, Ella is outside any category."
In the year between the HMT jazz festivals with nationally and internationally established guests, the big mini-festival now again gathers the in-house Jazzeleven to reveal their huge potential together with their professors in ad-hoc projects, this time in the spirit of Ella and Duke - a "flashback" evening of a special kind!
