If one attempts to give “soundscape”—a term all too often overused in musical contexts—a break, “Garden of Silence” offers an exciting counterpart. This small piece of nature would describe music that is cherished and nurtured, uniting the familiar with something from elsewhere, and the enduring with what is freshly sprouting—not least, it stands for a place of inner reflection.

The title perfectly sums up the music of Clément Janinet's new project. The violinist unearths Baroque music by Dietrich Buxtehude, combines it with the minimalism of Steve Reich, and then intersperses it with his own influences from jazz and traditional African music. Janinet knows that this requires the right equipment: he brings out his nyckelharpa, a historical string instrument whose tones are produced with mechanical keys. What seems unusual inevitably becomes accessible: its sounds move slowly in circles—sensitive and meditative.

And the silence? Not empty or oppressive, just plenty of space for tranquility and musical encounters between the international performers. Ambre Vuillermoz (acc) comes from France, like Janinet, Arve Henriksen (tr) from Norway, and Robert Lucaciu (db) from Leipzig. They have just launched this joint project, which will be released in May on the album of the same name—but first it can be experienced up close, or rather, close to nature.
