Improvisation is a term that is often used—especially in the context of jazz!—and at the same time broadly defined. For example, it can take place within a predefined musical form through a dynamic interplay with a compositional foundation. Or it can itself become a form that develops only in the process of playing.

A prime example of the latter is Simon Lucaciu’s new solo album, »Torsion«. The album, recorded in a deliberately minimalist style using piano and electronics, comprises 14 tracks—some are short miniatures consisting of just a few chord progressions, while others are longer improvisations that unfold, intertwine, and ultimately catch up with themselves again.

With “Torsion,” the winner of the 2023 Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Award builds on the free, expressionistic form of his nonet “Capacity of Movement,” with which he performed this past spring as part of the “Jazzclub Live” series. At the same time, he takes this approach to the extreme: one searches in vain for recurring motifs, and brief moments of harmonic beauty are constantly countered by dissonant interjections. The musical exploration is thus elevated not as a means, but as an end in itself. A bold and, at the same time, thrilling intervention!
