The silence between two movements, which belongs to the echo of the past thought and at the same time forms the vanguard of a new one, is what Shai Maestro, the rightly highly praised Israeli pianist, calls one of those moments from which, with confidence in one's own abilities, one can create something truly unheard. That he possesses this confidence, Maestro has indisputably demonstrated on his own first ECM solo album, "The Dream Thief," released in September 2018. Partly alone and partly with his magnificent trio, the musician creates scenarios of poetic depth, which are not afraid to touch on abysmal feelings.
