"The three of them play mostly self-written pieces, and not without talent," Philipp Lenz from the trade journal hunderttausend.de judged the Robbi Nakayama Trio in August. We can basically agree with this well-founded judgment, but we would like to point out that the band does not play "predominantly", but "exclusively" original compositions. That is a difference. Here, the eponymous pianist (who won an award at Jugend jazzt in 2014) as well as Stephan Deller on double bass and Marius Wankel on drums allow various contemporary jazz styles and classical music to merge. The trio is not interested in genre boundaries, rather it is about discovering new and old sound worlds together in the here and now. In other words: free, spherical sounds, groovy passages and balladic titles - everything is present in this organic mix.
