An all-star band from the young Leipzig jazz scene plays one of Miles Davis' most legendary albums. "Birth of the Cool" was recorded in 1949/50 and released in 1957. It stands at the transition of bebop to cool jazz and contains eleven pieces in the original version. For the first time Miles Davis worked here with Gil Evans. His nine-piece band also created strangely floating, dark sounds on the record through the use of French horn and tuba. Lee Konitz, who was a guest of the Leipzig Jazz Days in 2012 with the WDR Big Band, plays alto saxophone on the record.
Leipzig saxophonist Matti Oehl has now also put together a nonet dedicated to Miles' album, making the now seventh edition of the jazz club classics series FLASHBACK the "Rebirth of the Cool."
