Since Michael Wollny's trio debut call it [em] kicked off the ACT series Young German Jazz in January 2005, the feuilletons have been celebrating the young pianist not only as a representative of a new generation of jazz musicians in Germany, but also as one of the greatest up-and-coming talents on the piano. "Young enough not to have to carry around the jazz history ballast and awake enough to rediscover something old every day" (K. Heidkamp Die Zeit). Such praise naturally delights the modest musician, as does the sustained success of his five productions on ACT since then, which has brought him numerous performances at home and abroad with [em], the sextet Young Friends and, not least, his duo partner Heinz Sauer - and is crowned by awards such as the German Record Critics' Prize (for Melancholia, ACT 9433-2) or the Bavarian Cultural Promotion Prize 2005. "His artistic career is impressive" was the comment at the official award ceremony - and on closer inspection it presents itself as the consistent development of an extraordinary talent.
