Zöschg formed the band Loaness out of her intuitive solo project “LOA.” Together with Chiara Chistè, Yvonne Moriel, and Ruth Goller, the South Tyrolean/Copenhagen-based composer and vocal artist musically explores the tension between loneliness and community.

The origins of creative work are elusive and hard to trace. Like a mountain stream fed by numerous springs hidden underground. In an interview with Salto magazine, Laura Zöschg recalls the things that shaped her during her youth. She recalls her father’s iPod playlist during car rides together, songs she made up while watching the rain, choirs and bands, and a lullaby from her home region.

The South Tyrolean/Copenhagen-based composer and vocal artist didn’t realize the value of being alone until later, when she developed the intuitively experimental solo project “LOA” in 2022. Four years later, “aloan” (“alone”)—combined with the English word “loneliness”—has become the name of a new band: Loaness. The songs, which Zöschg wrote while pausing to observe the silence, became a collective ritual through repetition and ensemble work. “I actively participate in bringing the music to life, and at the same time, I’m an observer of how Ruth, Yvonne, and Chiara interpret it,” says the artist.As part of the “Euregio Jazz Workshop” at the South Tyrol Jazz Festival, Laura Zöschg further developed the pieces together with young musicians from the Europe Region of Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino, set amidst the idyllic landscape of the Dolomites.In Leipzig, she now joins forces with Italian singer Chiara Chistè, Austrian saxophonist Yvonne Moriel, and South Tyrolean-born bassist Ruth Goller, all of whom are also active as bandleaders in their own right. With a keen sense for a vibrant, ever-shifting soundscape that flows between ambient and noise, the four create hypnotic polyphony, abstract moments, and whisper-quiet beauty.
