Jazzclub Live: The Jorge Rossy All Stars Quintet
Jazz calendar tip
Mark Turner, Peter Bernstein, Doug Weiss and Al Foster - Jorge Rossy has not exaggerated with the band name of his new quintet. The Barcelona-born musician gathered the absolute spearhead of the New York jazz scene for album recordings in Basel and a tour that now brings the quintet to Leipzig.
Jorge Rossy was a drummer in Brad Mehldau's trio for 10 years, but studied trumpet in Boston, where he met people like Joshua Redman, Mark Turner and Chris Cheek, with whom he has played on and off since the early '90s (again: more drums than trumpet). Since his return to Europe 15 years ago, he has devoted himself primarily to the piano - but in this new band to the vibraphone. A jack-of-all-trades and master of all classes! And such are also his four fellow all-stars: saxophonist Mark Turner, guitarist Peter Bernstein and bassist Doug Weiss, like Rossy, also play time and again with Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and Kurt Rosenwinkel. And drummer Al Foster is worth the entrance fee alone: he not "only" played in Miles Davis' band for 13 years, but also with such legends as Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Wayne Shorter...
