Jazzclub Live: Flashback #22 The Real Mob
TIP
A smoky jazz club in the 50s. A couple of gentlemen are playing hard bop on stage, wearing suits - just like the other gentlemen who are swirling their cool drinks at the bar or small tables. Some wear saxophone straps, others pistol holsters under their jackets. Some think of Art Blakey, others of filling out the Godfather's order. Maybe wearing cement shoes down at the docks?
The band The Real Mob refers to this (possibly slightly romanticized) time, when jazz and the American mafia dealt with each other. Sinatra is said to have had contacts to the underworld and so on. Earthy, funky and boiling, Italian (uh, Mafia and Italy!) Damian Dalla Torre (sax), Vassily Zaraysky (p) from Russia (that too!) and the two Germans (laaangweilig!) Rudolf Stenzinger (b) and Bastian Rossmann (dr) evoke the spirit of Mafia jazz. They are supported in the second set by Georg Demel on trombone.
