Jazzclub Live: Flashback #15 Jay and Kai

The two young trombonists Antonia Hausmann and Johannes Lauer dedicate the 15th edition of the jazz club classics series Flashback to the trombone luminaries J. J. Johnson and Kai Winding. With Philip Frischkorn (p), Carl Wittig (kb) and Philipp Scholz (dr), they have brought in a promising rhythm section.
rhythm section, with whom they will also play pieces from Jiggs Whigham and Carl Fontana's record "Nice 'N' Easy". Born in Indianapolis in 1924, J. J. Johnson is regarded as the most important post-war trombonist, having performed with
Max Roach, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie as well as with Miles Davis, whose album "Birth of the Cool" he co-recorded. In 1954, he founded the duo Jay and Kai with the trombonist Kai Winding, who was born in Aarhus in 1922 and was also involved in the recording of "Birth of the Cool". Winding worked with Gerry Mulligan and Carl Fontana, among others, as well as with the Giants of Jazz (Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Thelonious Monk, Al McKibbon and Art Blakey). In the 60s, he formed the group Trombone Summit with Bill Watrous, Albert Mangelsdorff and Jiggs Whigham.
