Jazzclub Live: Flashback #12 Charles Mingus
TIP
The twelfth edition of our Flashback concert series is dedicated to the great composer, bassist, pianist Charles Mingus. Mingus, whose work is documented on over a hundred albums and more than 300 scores, fused elements of black music (gospel, blues, New Orleans) with collective improvisations and oral instrumental techniques into a completely new tonal language like few others. The enfant terrible of jazz history was not only a pioneer of the modern way of playing the double bass, an opponent of commercialization and a lover of cigars, but also one of the most important composers of contemporary jazz of the 1950s and 1960s. The instrumentations varied from trio to big band. For the "Charles Mingus Tribute Band" Johannes Moritz has written arrangements tailored to the quintet that dispense with harmony instruments, as was often the case with Mingus' bands. Excellent young jazz musicians from Leipzig combine Mingus' diverse and layered "Black-Power Music" in an interplay that is bursting with energy and humor. Playing for you: Johannes Moritz (ts, cl, bcl, arr), Basti Wehle (ss, ts), Julian Schließmeyer (tb), Paul Brauner (kb) and Tom Friedrich (b).
