In 2007, the ensemble—a classical string quartet consisting of Rodrigo Bauzá (v), Marjolaine Locher (v), Johannes Dittmar (va), and Hui-Chun Lin (cello)—as well as a jazz piano trio—Dmitrij Golovanov (piano), Robert Lucaciu (bass), Beat Freisen (drums, percussion)—made the leap straight to the main festival stage of the 31st “ Leipziger Jazztage ” following a compelling performance at the National Jazz Festival for Young Talent. Since then, Beat Freisen’s Spelunkenorchester has been on a roll. Backed by original compositions, they blend group improvisation with solo passages to create a cohesive whole of extraordinary dimensions, driven by their bandleader’s rock-infused drumming.
