Friedhelm Schönfeld Quartet
He is one of the pioneers of improvised music in the GDR. As early as 1977, saxophonist Friedhelm Schönfeld appeared at the Leipzig Jazztage...
... His trio with Klaus Koch and Baby Sommer was style-forming for East German jazz: structured, thematically bound, yet free-tonal playing style with expressive melodicism. He organized international jazz workshops in Berlin, was active in the Canadian jazz scene from 1983, and subsequently held professorial teaching positions in Germany.
Schönfeld founded his current quartet in spring 2011 in view of the revival of the Peitzer Jazzwerkstatt with internationally experienced comrades-in-arms:
The playfully original drummer Ernst Bier has accompanied Perry Robinson, Attila Zoller, Chet Baker, Lester Bowie and Walter Norris, among others. Gerhard 'Kubi' Kubach is a classically influenced double bassist with virtuoso bowing technique who has worked with Zbigniew Namyslowski, Janucz Stefanski and Hannes Zerbe, among others. And the deep-toned saxophone counterpart Rolf von Nordenskjöld should feel quite at home here as a member of the HMT and a frequent LeipJAZZ player.
