CEL (Felix Kubin & Hubert Zemler)

Double concert with MAIKA.
Behind CEL are the Hamburg Dada enthusiast and jack-of-all-trades Felix Kubin and the Warsaw-based percussionist Hubert Zemler. Together they explore the tense relationship between the strict minimalism of the German Kraut underground of the 1970s and the early NDW sound characterized by musical avant-gardes. The result is as fascinating as it is danceable.
As a close-knit sequencer duo, they have already released two records, each more sophisticated than the last. »Gegenwelt«, released this spring on Bureau B, brings together eight tracks that whirl any dust out of the ear canals in a hectic, eclectic manner from the very first listen. Rarely is it quiet, it always remains tactful. Felix Kubin interweaves sound synthesis and sequences, often on his beloved KORG MS 20, and also uses a self-developed Mechatronikon - an analog percussion sequencer that makes surrounding objects vibrate and resonate precisely. Meanwhile, Hubert Zemler notoriously and motorically taps the drums and chases after the electronics in 4/4 time. Any empty spaces are filled with short, thunderstorm-like interludes. This leaves little time to take a deep breath, but all the more to marvel.
