Jazzkalender #334

Let's talk about jazz... and wise calendar sayings

It's done: the 48th Jazz Days are behind us. In a way, it's a strange imbalance year after year: you work obsessively for months towards this one week, and then it passes you by relentlessly as if in a frenzy. "C'est La Vie", says the calendar slogan, and: "What remains are memories." And, as always, the calendar and its inimitable wisdom are right.

JAZZKALENDER NOVEMBER

Reason enough to browse through it for a moment - after all, when, if not after the Jazz Days, is there time for that? "Strength lies in tranquillity", Confucius is said to have once said, with which he probably unsuspectingly created a rock-solid and much-quoted calendar saying. Ernst Ferstl followed on from this: "Contentment is a quiet garden where you can rest," he knew. He may not have become a botanist, but he did become a writer with a penchant for aphorisms. Kurt Tucholsky, on the other hand, said: "Man: a living being that makes bad music. Sometimes he gives up, but then he's dead."

Tucholsky died in 1935, but if the writer and journalist had had the opportunity to visit the Leipzig Jazz Days later - who knows, perhaps he would have revised his opinion. Especially as people need to rest at regular intervals, otherwise their demise threatens to come sooner than they would usually like...

Meditative tranquillity is not only found in complete isolation, but also at quieter concerts, for example. Scottish singer/songwriter Rachel Sermanni, for example, has created a fragile, intimate sound based on folk, traditional and jazz that creates a somnambulistic atmosphere and sometimes evokes memories of the great Joni Mitchell. She will be performing her current program at Neues Schauspiel on 5 November.

If you prefer electronic sounds but still long for relaxation after the autumnal hustle and bustle, we recommend the concert by Leipzig musician Malo Moray on November 27 at Horns Erben. His warm ambient sound combines double bass tunes with electronics. More than once, the elegiac soundscapes of Brian Eno, the master of sophisticated background music, come to mind.

But of course, November also offers powerful rhythms and esprit if you're interested. As usual, we have bundled the most important dates in the current issue. With this in mind: happy browsing!

See you soon,

Luca
