Musique Concrète, improvisation, minimal and electroacoustic music merge with a collage of historical film footage, private photographs and interviews with contemporary witnesses - film concert about migration in the GDR

With a synthesis of film and music, the artists' collective shortfilmlivemusic creates new approaches to a topic that seems almost forgotten after the fall of the "Iron Curtain":
In the name of "socialist friendship between peoples" or as "brotherly aid for distressed states", more than 100,000 male and female workers came to the GDR from 1965 onwards - from Poland, Cuba, Vietnam and Mozambique, among others. The sending of the workers was subject to strict official controls, and after three to five years the delegates were supposed to return to their home countries. In 1989, however, these contract workers were confronted with the reality of political change.
Against the backdrop of the current debate about refugees, admission quotas and xenophobia, the film collage "Völkerfreundschaftswerke" asks, from personal and historical perspectives, who these people were who left their homeland, what their motives were for leaving their familiar surroundings, what kind of country they found upon arrival and what their everyday life in the GDR was like.
A collage of historical film footage, private photographs, documents and interviews with contemporary witnesses thus merges with musique concrète, minimal music, electroacoustic music and improvisation to create an aesthetic visual and sound experience. In the process, the composers dealt intensively with the meaning of music for the contract workers as a home in a foreign land.
The artists' collective shortfilmlivemusic has been developing film concerts since 2005. In their works, the artists create thematic arcs and enable an artistic, non-museum approach to complex contemporary historical topics.
