When the name "Christopher Komeda" appears in the credits of a Hollywood movie - usually one directed by Roman Polański - music lovers' eyebrows go up. The doctor, film composer and jazz pianist whose birth name was Krzysztof Trzciński is still remembered 40 years after his death. His album "Astigmatic" with Tomasz Stańko and Zbigniew Namysłowski has left audible traces to this day, and his soundtracks for "Dance of the Vampires" or "Rosemary's Baby" turned the films into classics.
In her cinematic essay, Claudia Buthenhoff-Duffy attempts not only to approach the musician, but also to capture the attitude to life of his era, the fifties and sixties. She follows the artist chronologically through the period of the end of the war, departure, numbness and flight to freedom, as well as geographically through Poland, Scandinavia, France and the USA. Well-known contemporaries such as Andrzej Wajda, Tomasz Stańko, Jerzy Skolimowski and, of course, Roman Polański have their say and try to fathom the myth of Komeda.
