Liquid, gaseous and solid. The musical exploration of the aggregate states of water in the atmospheric setting of the Old City Baths.

It begins with the cries of approaching seagulls circling greedily above the spray and hastily flapping their wings. Then the dive and we dive into oceanic shallows. There where once all life began - in the water!

This is how "Floating: Reflections on Water" begins onomatopoeically. A physical-aesthetic search for traces, which Damian Dalla Torre, Felix Römer and Richard Köster have musically translated especially for the Jazzfestival Südtirol. One element, three aggregate states, three composers. "In order to approach the sound spectrum of water, we experimented with field recordings, water microphones or coffee machines, among other things, and incorporated the resulting sounds into the composition," Dalla Torre explains. The composer and saxophonist is a founding member of the Euregio Collective, which was formed in 2017 as part of the South Tyrol Jazz Festival and for which "Floating" was also composed.

The ensemble of young musicians from North Tyrol, Trentino and South Tyrol has a "very characteristic band sound," emphasizes Dalla Torre, precisely because the large ensemble also comes together again and again in smaller formations and can try things out. So now the Euregio Collective, this musical experimental laboratory, is letting itself be driven by a new rhythmic maelstrom, swimming free from the rushing current of the tides. What just poured around us and over us now rises, water vapor turns into plush spring clouds. The rise is followed by the fall. Below zero, water turns to ice, as is well known. Rival forces move toward each other, circle around each other, push under and over each other. It drips and rushes, it creaks and splinters. A game between surface and depth, between illusion and reality. In this meditative play of forms, in which reality is only reflected in a broken way, the thought suggests itself: The world is what we make of it!

After its premiere at this year's South Tyrol Jazz Festival, "Floating: Reflections on Water" is now coming to the Leipziger Jazztage! Here the Euregio Collective will also meet musicians from Leipzig. With live visuals by Dutch lighting designer Nico de Rooij.
