The Sun Ra Arkestra

Westbad

Interplanetary super-sonic jazz - or rather: "Phre, the music of the sun" - as the Afrofuturist and founder of Arkestra, Sun Ra, called his music.

Hardly any other figure of the 20th century was the subject of so many pop culture myths during his lifetime as the composer and pianist Sun Ra. Born Herman "Sonny" Poole Blount in Alabama in 1914, the artist is considered one of the great pioneers of electronic music and free jazz. He was the first to link jazz with space themes and spiritual ideas of the African diaspora - and thus became an important inspiration for the artistic philosophy of Afrofuturism. Even today he has a great influence on numerous artists. With his very own style and his innovative ideas, he polarized the feuilleton and the public. Sun Ra called himself after the Egyptian sun god Ra from the 1950s on, began to wear fancy costumes and headdresses in an Egyptian style and claimed to come from the planet Saturn. He developed an art figure of "cosmic" philosophies and lyrical poetry that preached peace above all.
His Sun Ra Arkestra, a neologism for "ark" and "orchestra" that began in 1956, featured hundreds of musicians over the years, including jazz greats such as Pharoah Sanders and Don Cherry. After Sun Ra died in 1993, the saxophonist and longtime companion of Sun Ra, Marshall Allen, took over the leadership of the 12-piece ensemble from Philadelphia. The now 94-year-old, who was at Sun Ra's side for nearly 40 years, continues his friend's pioneering work in his spirit.
