LEIPZIGER JAZzTAGE

Spielvereinigung Sued & MDR Radio Choir "Inseparable. Indivisible."

Opera House

World premiere of the project "Inseparable. Indivisible." on the occasion of 30 years of peaceful revolution. This is a composition by US percussionist and composer John Hollenbeck written especially for Leipziger Big Band Spielvereinigung Sued and the MDR Radio Choir, with a libretto by lyricist Nora Gomringer.

What does humanity mean in 2019? While objective truths and facts are being questioned, is there still a need to stand up for our fellow human beings and raise our voices? In the face of global conflicts and large refugee flows, are aspirations for withdrawal and isolation understandable and justified? Or should we consciously counteract the current tendency that generally valid values and norms of living together and respect for fellow human beings are increasingly being lost? The specially commissioned festival project "Inseparable.Indivisible" is dedicated to themes such as charity and humanity, freedom and democracy - on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution in Germany and other Eastern European countries.
U.S. percussionist and composer John Hollenbeck will compose an approximately one-hour work for big band and mixed choir. Hollenbeck is one of the most creative minds in contemporary music in the field of tension between jazz, minimal music, avant-garde and free improvisation. His sound aesthetics, musical language and compositional techniques are unique and ideally suited to the diverse sonic and textural possibilities offered by the combination of large jazz ensemble and mixed choir. The libretto for the work is written by Swiss-German poet Nora Gomringer. The Ingeborg Bachmann Prize winner describes music as an important source of inspiration for her and has worked on various unusual performance projects in recent years together with the percussionists Günter Baby Sommer and Philipp Scholz.
