Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Award 2018 - Award Ceremony and Concert
Following...
Philipp Rumsch receives the Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Award 2018 - we congratulate him and are looking forward to his award concert, which will also open the 42nd Leipzig Jazz Days.
At the UT Connewitz, Leipzig's Mayor of Culture Dr. Skadi Jennicke will then present the prize to the pianist and composer. The annual prize has been awarded since 2011 as part of the Leipzig Jazz Days and is organized by Jazzclub Leipzig e.V. in cooperation with the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig. This year's prize is again endowed with 6,500 euros, which will once again be provided by the Marion Ermer Foundation.
Philipp Rumsch will play the prize-winner's concert with his ensemble, whose music may be released by the prestigious Bochum-based independent label Denovali Records. Afterwards, the British band Empirical will play the second part of the double concert, leading into the thematic focus of this year's Leipzig Jazz Days, which will present primarily British jazz under the motto "Fish'n'Chips."
Philipp Rumsch (*1994) is one of the most interesting musicians in Leipzig, especially because he shimmies quite naturally from one genre to another without getting caught between the chairs. And his ensemble also happily defies categorization. With such diverse fathers in spirit as Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Brian Eno and Aphex Twin, Rumsch and his eleven comrades-in-arms venture into a process of reversal: they transfer the tonal language of electronic-digital music, i.e. the reproduction of "real" sounds through machine abstraction, back into analog spheres, placing it back into the hands of real people.
The renowned jury, which this year consisted of Winnie Brückner, Heinz Sauer and Dr. Bert Noglik, selected the prize winner from 9 valid applications. The justification for the award states: "With the ensemble he has formed, Philipp Rumsch has created a platform that enables him to transform the experience he has gained in dealing with different musical fields into a group sound. Transcending supposed stylistic boundaries, he fuses influences from ambient, minimal music and pop. In doing so, Philipp Rumsch combines compositional approaches from contemporary and classical music with the expressive possibilities of jazz improvisation. With the twelve-piece Philipp Rumsch Ensemble, the pianist and composer has also succeeded in building a network that brings together musicians from different scenes in a focus on a common project."
