Tickets 36 - 64 Euro
Guitar legend Pat Metheny will be making a guest appearance at the Leipzig Opera House for one concert on his major world tour this fall. The three-hour work show "An Evening with Pat Metheny" will close the 41st Leipzig Jazz Days on October 21, 2017. The tradition-rich festival takes place from October 12 to 21 in ten venues in Leipzig and this year puts the guitar at the center of its program with nearly 30 concerts. Tickets are available for 36 - 64 euros through the Leipzig Opera and all major ticket exchanges plus VVK fee.
Pat Metheny is considered one of the greatest and most successful guitarists of the last 40 years, playing with Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette and Ornette Coleman, but also with David Bowie and Joni Mitchell. His legendary Pat Metheny Group developed a unique floating-melodic ensemble sound. The 20-time Grammy winner became the youngest member to be inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame in 2013 - only the fourth guitarist after guitar gods Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery. With Gwylim Simcock (piano), Linda Oh (bass) and Antonio Sanchez (drums), he presents "An Evening with Pat Metheny," covering the full range of his musical output over the past decades.
"I've created so much music that I can never really devote myself to. So I thought it would be fun to collaborate with very specifically selected musicians who are able to play a lot of my past work. My hope is that after a few concerts, when we are really in tune, we will be able to reach new musical heights! With Antonio, Linda and Gwilym anything is possible! The whole band has the potential to develop a completely unique form of playing together - I can't wait to experience this moment!" (Pat Metheny)
Metheny has been playing with Antonio Sanchez for over 15 years in a wide variety of formations; the drummer composed the international award-winning soundtrack to "Birdman" and, after just one year, is returning to the big stage of the Leipzig Opera, where he presented an exclusive program with dancers from the Leipzig Ballet in 2016 as a commissioned composition for the Leipzig Jazz Days. Metheny says of him, "Antonio is one of the best drummers of all time for me, and the fact that we can look back on so much music together makes our relationship special for both sides."
Young bassist Linda Oh is one of the greats of the New York jazz scene. The Malaysian-born Australian has played with many big names. What Metheny appreciates about her is her outstanding understanding of music and her great imagination, but above all "her unconditional will to communicate - not only with her fellow musicians, but also with the audience." Linda Oh has just released her third album and presented it at the BMW World Jazz Award in Munich.
Rounding out the ensemble is Welsh pianist Gwilym Simcock, hailed as one of the most spectacular British pianists in decades. Simcock was considered a child prodigy, receiving the British Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in piano and French horn at the age of eleven. He studied with John Taylor in London, and was encouraged early on by Chick Corea. Pat Metheny about him: "Various people have told me that Gwilym very often mentions the influence that my early albums had on his work. Since I consider him one of the best pianists I've ever heard, this was very flattering to me."
Pat Metheny (g), Gwilym Simcock (p), Linda Oh (b) and Antonio Sanchez (dr).
