Nils Petter Molvær "Switch"

Schauspiel Leipzig

The Norwegian electro-jazz pioneer with new band
Act 2 from 3

His new album "Switch" completes a long cycle for Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær: In the mid-1980s, he attracted attention alongside Norwegian jazz pioneers Jon Christensen and Arild Andersen in the band Masqualero, and a decade later, with his band Khmer, he created the basis for the now typically Norwegian symbiosis of jazz and electronic music.
Since then, Molvaer has repeatedly broken new ground in countless projects, most recently in 2013 in a duo with Berlin-based electronic producer Moritz von Oswald on the hypnotic ambient CD "1/1." There he found a new musical and narrative approach. But the common thread that runs through his entire body of work continues to be the search for the optimal balance between the synthetic and the organic. On "Switch", this search reaches a new culmination point. Once again, the go-getting man of conviction stays in two worlds and on several time levels at the same time. With complex, partly electronically produced sounds, but sometimes also acoustically elaborated sound worlds that sound tremendously electronic, he sets off into an urban globalized future, while he retreats to a small village far away from the big metropolises with the sound of the slide guitar and his own rather folkloristic improvisations.
With pedal steel guitarist Geir Sundstol, pianist Morten Qvenild and drummer Erland Dahlen, Molvær has put together a new band - and appears unusually relaxed here. Until now, all of the Norwegian's albums have been characterized by an insurmountable inner polarity between an extremely peaceful person and a radical provocateur. The compositional arc that Molvær creates with his pieces is reminiscent not least of Pink Floyd. Whenever one enters the musical process as a listener, one is immediately enveloped by the depth and changing colors of his world. There is an infinitely wide space that tolerates no escape.
