Michael Wollny "Goldberg Tangents" with Leafcutter John & Alex Nowitz
Johann Sebastian Bach - Glenn Gould - Thomas Bernhard - Michael Wollny: Series "Across the English Channel
With "Goldberg Tangents," the jazz professor by choice from Leipzig touches on the cosmos of the Goldberg Variations and their reception. In doing so, Wollny takes up Thomas Bernhard's novel "Der Untergeher," in which two aspiring concert pianists realize their failure when they hear Glenn Gould with his epochal interpretation of the Goldberg Variations. It is not only Bach's music, but first and foremost the very unique musicality of Thomas Bernhard's language that interests Wollny: its rhythm, its repetition, its variation. Wollny processes text excerpts from "Untergeher" to couple them with his own jazz improvisations on the piano. In this way, he directs the reverberations of the Goldberg Variations back to the music.
