Kit Downes "Obsidian
Saxophone-church organ concert for the ECM debut album, which Olivier Messiaen would certainly have liked
Kit Downes was born in Norwich in 1986 and is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. He won the BBC Jazz Award in 2008 and the British Jazz Award as "Rising Star" in 2010. Above all, he became known from 2007 with the band Empirical (which plays the festival opener of this year's Leipziger Jazztage on Oct. 11 without him), which was described by many jazz magazines as a creative innovator of the genre. And even if Empirical plays without him, Downes can be experienced a second time at the festival: with Lucy Railton and Lucia Cadotsch on Oct. 14 at UT Connewitz.
Since 2009, however, Downes can also be heard with his trio Troyka, in which he plays organ and other keyboard instruments, accompanied by guitarist Chris Montague and drummer Joshua Blackmore. Between progressive rock, minimal music and jazz, the trio has released three albums so far. In his solo project he performs pieces for church organ. The album for it will be released later this year - his album guest saxophonist Tom Challenger will be with him in Leipzig.
