The double bass player is one of the central figures of the renaissance of jazz manouche in southern Germany. Second concert at 21:00.

"The jury of the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award, which this year went to three young musicians, including the 30-year-old double bass player, emphasized that "what is remarkable about Julia Hornung is her extraordinary versatility. This laudation is absolutely apt, because Julia Hornung is an active player in the young German jazz scene. Growing up in a family of musicians, she learned to play a wide variety of instruments from an early age until she discovered the electric bass and finally the double bass through her older brother. The stages of her education led her from the vocational school for music in Plattling to a junior study at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz to the jazz study of electric bass at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich. She has been a Yehudi Menuhin scholarship holder since 2017.

But that's not all: Julia Hornung has founded Velvet Edition, a music publishing house, and Upstroke Music, a booking agency that is considered Munich's platform for gypsy swing and acoustic jazz music. With its own festival and booking network in southern Germany, Upstroke Music presents local artists and genre greats. Hornung is also active behind the scenes, a rarity in the music business, and has therefore become an important driving force in the networking of diverse musical milieus. This once again demonstrates the versatility that the jury of the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Awards have singled out in Julia Hornung.

But also musically the double bassist moves on different terrains and is involved in numerous projects of the independent scene throughout Germany. In recent years, she has become known for her two main projects in particular. One is SiEA, a high-performance avant-garde pop band consisting of seven musicians with jazz, electro and techno touches, in which Hornung uses the electric bass to play a wide variety of rhythmic and stylistic elements and sounds. On the other hand, there is the Monaco Swing Ensemble, in which she plays hot jazz on the double bass in the tradition of Django Reinhardt, which can be heard on the band's recently released second album "Solitude".The celebrated double bassist now comes to Leipzig with her new quartet Gypsy Collectif, in which she unites companions from the past years. She presents her own arrangements of gypsy and jazz standards - mostly from the pen of gypsy jazz founder Django Reinhard - as well as original compositions. Julia Hornung is one of the central figures in the renaissance of jazz manouche in southern Germany and once again shows her filigree, dynamic and lively bass playing with Gypsy Collectif.
