This year's Jazz Young Talent Award of the City of Leipzig goes to Carl Christian Wittig with his Aurora Octet.

This year's Jazz Young Talent Award of the City of Leipzig goes to Carl Christian Wittig with his Aurora Octet. Inspired and fascinated by classical modernism, contemporary jazz and current pop music, the double bassist founded the ensemble about six years ago. In the meantime, the musicians have grown together to form a multi-faceted ensemble that effortlessly combines the energetic freedom of a jazz quartet with the melodic elegance of a string ensemble.

In the line-up of the Aurora Octet, Carl Wittig brings together trained jazz musicians with musicians from the classical music scene. Musically they follow the style of a piano-less jazz quartet with bandleaders like Gerry Mulligan or Ornette Coleman. On the classical side, Bela Bartok, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy are an inspiring source. The incomparable sound of the Aurora Octet is defined by well thought-out compositions alternating with free improvisations. These are so skillfully balanced that the sound merges into a flowing overall concept.
