First Date at it's best: Here you can see 3 saxophonists play who couldn't be more different. Sofia Salvo, Chris Pistiokos and Frank Gratkowski are performing together for the first time on one of the festival stages of the Leipziger Jazztage as part of a "First Date".

Sofia Salvo has power! The Argentine baritone saxophonist focuses on free improvisation and wants to create interdisciplinarity through her music with others. She has a penchant for wacky sounds and gives all your passion to music. The perfect partner for a first date.

Chris Pitsiokos is an exceptional talent - the saxophonist, composer and improviser leaves room for all involved actors to express their own aesthetic vision and individuality. In this way, his work stands out from traditional compositional methods and gives space for the emergence of something new.

The two are joined by Hamburg saxophonist, clarinettist and composer Frank Gratkowski. Whether solo or in ensembles, whether as a musician or as part of a teaching position at music colleges - Gratkowski is not easily missed. For him, music must be honest and profound, regardless of genre or style.

The Leipzig Jazz Days place a special focus on new musical encounters: Artists* who have never made music together before are invited to celebrate their first collaboration on one of our festival stages in resonance with the audience. With few or even no previous rehearsals, these concerts are carried by the tension of a first acquaintance, by joyful expectations or cautious skepticism, which at best gradually transforms into familiarity. As always in life, getting to know each other for the first time is also associated with the risk of realizing that one may simply not have much to say to each other - and perhaps it is precisely in this not-knowing that the appeal of this format lies.
