Elliot Galvin Trio
Jazz music for Radiohead fans - the new star in the piano trio sky from London
"Jazz Music for the Radiohead fan", writes the Rochester City Newspaper about the trio around the young pianist from London, who in turn reminds others of the young Django Bates.
On his third album "The Influencing Machine", the young pianist, keyboardist and composer Elliot Galvin presents himself as a musician who is as independent as he is idiosyncratic, boldly keeping away from too many compromises. As a member of the band Dinosaur, he was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, among others.
The inspiration for the album "The Influencing Machine" was the book of the same name by Mike Jay, a historical account of the life of James Tilly-Matthews, who was a double agent, tea merchant, political thinker and architect during the British-French War - and also the first fully documented case of a paranoid schizophrenic: Tilly-Matthews was convinced that he was being piloted by a machine called "Air Loom." This would be operated by a shady gang, and influenced his mental and physical behavior with the help of radiation.
Elliot Galvin discovered the book in the Wellcome Collection in London, which deals with the connections between art and medicine. He was fascinated by the life and times of this unusual character, as well as the startling parallels to our modern lives, which are equally dominated by political turmoil and modern "influencing machines".
The result is a hugely ambitious album that reflects these timely but seemingly timeless themes, combining old and new sounds to reflect the chaos, beauty, joy and sadness of this world we live in. And Elliot Galvin is a master at constructing and manipulating musical ideas to achieve desired results - using analog synthesizer, Hammond organ and repurposed children's toys.
