Her concerts in the crowded event barrel of the Moritzbastei were impressive. Sophie Hunger is voice magic, musicality, creativity - folk, jazz, classical, funk - Björk, Dylan, Joplin - poetry, protest, naturalness - but ultimately intangible, like true magic!
At the 36th Leipziger Jazztage she will perform at the Leipzig Opera House. On 27.9.2012 she will play a complete concert program after the performance of the WDR Big Band (star soloists John Taylor, Diana Torto, Lee Konitz)!
Sophie Hunger grew up in Switzerland, England and Germany.
In 2006 she recorded her first album "Sketches on Sea" in her living room and sold several thousand copies on her own. Collaborations with other musicians such as Erik Truffaz, The Youngs Gods and Stephan Eicher began. Soon she was also noticed abroad. The Guardian wrote "She's Laura Marling, Beth Orton and Björk in one folk-rocking package", Le Monde "excellent" or the German Musikexpress "breathtaking".
When her first studio album "Monday's Ghost" was released in 2009, it reached #1 in the Swiss album charts, as did the subsequent album "1983" in 2010. Sophie Hunger has broken the boundaries of her home country, including being the first Swiss artist to be invited to the prestigious Glastonbury Festival.
In spring 2011, Sophie Hunger was awarded the Swiss Award and received a Prix de la Création Musicale de France. In 2011, her path took her to North America, where she toured with Madeleine Peyroux and the band Tinariwen, among others.
In Germany, Hunger also became known for her fictional columns in Die Zeit. In spring 2012, Hunger staged her stage play "Bob Dylan - Be Part of My Dream" (on the occasion of the Grammy Museum exhibition) at the Cité de la Musique, which, thanks to its great success, will have its revival this summer at the Montréal Jazz Festival. Also this summer, her collaboration on the play "Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz" by director Cornelia Rainer will be seen at the Salzburg Festival.
Finally, in October 2012 her new album will be released, which was created in collaboration with producer Adam Samuels (Warpaint, Daniel Lanois, John Frusciante) in Europe and America. Co-musicians included Josh Klinghoffer (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes), Steven Nistor (Daniel Lanois, Danger Mouse) as well as Michael Flury, Simon Gerber and Alberto Malo (Sophie Hunger Band). The release will be followed by a tour of North America and Europe beginning in October 2012.
"Sophie Hunger has the power [...] to create such a tremendous intensity at her concerts that her audience hardly dares to breathe." (Musikexpress)
"The audience raves for minutes with enthusiasm: after an hour and a half, deserved reward for a ravishing concert." (Tagesspiegel)
