After the cancelled release tour in spring 2020, the Philipp Rumsch Ensemble now brings the music of "µ: of anxiety x discernment" to the stage for the first time. Enthusiastic reviews of the album at BBC, Electronic Sounds, NDR and Radioeins and many more, as well as international attention accompanied the release in April 2020.
Outside, at night in the winter-naked forest - every breath one that unexpectedly stirs up the surroundings loudly. Frozen mud whips noisily against the rattling bicycle chain, herons startle in the treetops, and their flapping wings also nourish what lingers in the darkness and awaits us. Fear.
On his third Denovali release "µ: of anxiety x discernment", pianist, sound designer and composer Philipp Rumsch, born in 1994, dedicates himself to this feeling of indeterminate inner constriction. Based on research, observations and self-conducted interviews, he and his ensemble create a multi-perspective picture of this complex of feelings. Rumsch wants to move away from the individual experience of anxiety to the collective perception of this phenomenon. Doesn't that lonely palpitation of the heart, triggered by the maybe-hidden in the dark branches, seem almost like a romantic relic of earlier days, in the face of a growing political and capitalistic exploitation of fear? The ensemble, founded on the idea of translating the sound languages of ambient, minimal music and avant-pop into an orchestral format, consists of musicians from Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden and Weimar. We last experienced the ensemble in 2018 during the 43rd Leipzig Jazz Days on the occasion of Rumsch's award with the Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Prize - also at UT Connewitz. Atmospheric soundscapes, joint sound improvisations beyond classical improvisation structures, embedded in the fantastic backdrop of the UT's, left us entranced. Palpitations? Of course! In anticipation of new insights and new music from the Philipp Rumsch Ensemble.
