Double concert with CAMILLE ÉMAILLE - Singer Mariana Sadovska has been making field recordings in Ukrainian villages for decades, collecting forgotten songs and singing techniques. In this special concert project, her recordings have flowed into a compositional dialogue between Sadovska and composer and percussionist Max Andrzejewski. "Max found the soul of these songs," Sadovska says of his approach to the songs.

The result of the collaboration are arrangements for a transnational large ensemble that unites musicians of contemporary music, free improvisation and jazz. The ensemble is complemented by electronic artist Marta Zapparolli and her tape installation, with which she processes archive recordings.

The project was developed as early as 2021 by dramaturge Elisa Erkelenz in close dialogue with the participating artists. In the following months, it gained increasing political relevance in the course of the escalation of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine.

The Leipziger Jazztage concert at UT Connewitz will mark the ensemble's first encounter with the Ukraine-based trio Kurbasy, who bring another traditional-avant-garde approach to the songs.

An evening that circles around the dark, the memory, the pain - and the revolt. And yet full of hope.
