Anoushka Shankar
& MDR Symphony Orchestra (conductor: Kristjan Järvi) at the Gewandhaus.
Anoushka Shankar (sitar) and the MDR Symphony Orchestra with conductor Kristjan Järvi perform Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma's first and second "Om Shivam" symphonies as well as Ravi Shankar's Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra No. 2 "Raga Mala".
"West meets East" - the title of his 1966 album recorded with Yehudi Menuhin marks Ravi Shankar's lifelong effort to bring together Western and Eastern music and musicians. His breakthrough in the pop music world came with Beatles guitarist George Harrison, who once called him the "godfather of world music." Shankar, who cultivated a millennia-old tradition, largely dispensed with the harmonies, counterpoint and sound patterns of European art music in his later compositions, which were suitable for the Western concert hall, in order to give space to the specific characteristics and spirit of raga music.
Pyarelal Sharma learned the violin as a child and almost followed his friend Zubin Mehta to Vienna. He stayed in Mumbai, discovered Bollywood and, with his duo partner Laxmikant, composed the music for over 400 films from 1963. His two symphonies are dedicated to his "classical-western" musical side, but without abandoning his Indian-spiritual side.
