Last year, we were already thrilled by the program of our colleagues at the Kulturarena in Jena. And this summer, too, it's worth making the trip to Thuringia - especially since the low ticket prices leave plenty of room for tickets or a couple of liters of gasoline.
Nils Landgren's Funk Unit has been on the road on behalf of the groove for 20 years now (July 16), the Beninese-French-New York song poet Angélique Kidjo plays world music with a wide variety of influences from Afro-pop, R&B, jazz, Latin American and Afro-Caribbean music (July 18), and the New Zealand big band Fat Freddy's Drop plays relaxed reggae funk dubsoul (July 19).
New, cosmopolitan world music in Cape Verdean, Portuguese, French and English is offered by Mayra Andrade (7/23). U.S. John Grant has moved to Iceland specifically to develop his folk-pop with an electronic pulse (7/24). Also from the U.S. is Raul Midón, who infuses classic soul, blues and funk elements into his Latin American singer/songwriting (7/27). Malian singer-guitarist Fatoumata Diawara and Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca are considered great innovators of traditional musical heritage in their home countries. Now they unite the historically closely intertwined traditions of West Africa and Cuba to create a new, shared sound (7/30).
